South Brunswick’s Princeton Sports Center will host local and international figure skaters during a free Holiday Showcase open to the public this Saturday.
The rink will host two Olympic gold medalists, Evgeny Platov and Viktor Petrenko, as well as the brother-and-sister ice dancing team of John and Sinead Kerr and several local skaters.
”We have 35 acts that day, so it’s a pretty big show,” skating director Laureen Valentino said.
Mr. Platov trains his skaters at the Princeton Sports Center, located on Cornwall Road, which helped Ms. Valentino make the holiday ice show possible.
”Evgeny Platov has two teams that were skating out of our rink,” Ms. Valentine said. “One team was not available and, so not to disappoint the public, he called on a friend, who happened to be the Olympic gold medallist Viktor Petrenko.”
The show will feature figure skaters of all skill levels, ranging from the Olympic champions to beginners. The performers will be single skaters, pair skaters and five synchronized skating teams.
”I put together a show of skaters of all levels, from 4 years old to our oldest skater, who’s 65,” Ms. Valentino said.
Three of the skaters, who train at the Princeton Sports Center and will be performing in the Holiday Showcase, are junior national competitors.
”We will have local skaters, and three of them just competed at the Junior Nationals,” Ms. Valentino said. “I’ve watched them grow, so they’re like our rink babies.”
With the Princeton Sports Center all decked out for Christmas and Hanukkah, Ms. Valentino is certain that the Holiday Showcase will help get its audience into the holiday spirit.
”It will help bring in the holiday cheer and you can go to a fabulous show for free,” she said. “It really just rings in the holidays and brings the community together.”
With the show just days away, Ms. Valentino is a little anxious.
”It’s a lot of work pulling off such a huge show,” she said. “I am, as well as nervous, totally excited. I put my heart into everything I do, and it really is family-oriented and a beautiful facility.”
The Princeton Sports Center features a Starbucks Coffee bar and heating tubes to keep the audience warm, as well as couches, a TV and other amenities to make Saturday’s show-goers or regular skaters comfortable.
Saturday’s Holiday Showcase will run from 2:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. There will be an open skate with Santa Claus prior to the performance, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information, call the Princeton Sports Center at 732-940-6800 or visit www.princetonsportscenter.com.
